Rabobank is committed to helping local, rural communities combat climate change, land degradation and food insecurity. That’s why we’re developing Acorn, an agroforestry-led carbon removal system for smallholder farmers.
This summer, we will auction off high-quality, ex-post, certified carbon removal units. For the benefit of our planet, smallholder farmers—and you.

Rabobank’s intention is to build a global, transparent carbon removal system for
smallholder farmers who sequester carbon on their land using agroforestry techniques. By facilitating
the transition to agroforestry and making its technologies available at smaller scales, Rabobank hopes
to enable smallholder farmers to participate in the carbon marketplace and earn its financial
benefits.
Bringing together smallholder communities with an agroforestry-led carbon
trade is at the core of Rabobank’s Acorn program and its aim to make a real contribution to climate
preservation, land renewal and food security.

James has an accounting degree from university, but he went back home to become a
farmer. Farming is a family tradition, but more importantly it’s a passion for him. James is always
looking for more information and education and he is eager to try new agricultural practices on his
land.
“I have rice and agroforestry. In the agroforestry I grow mostly vegetables and fruit trees, like 10 avocado trees. I have bananas, 3 mango trees, 2 orange trees and I grow Popo and potatoes. I also grow plants that are not edible, but I just have them for intercropping, like the trees I grow for animals and they cover crops. That correlation.. there is interaction where the crops benefit from the trees, and the trees benefit from the crops.”
