Essential documents for Data Collectors
The Participation Agreement
A Data Collector cannot collect any data without bringing the Participant Agreement and Data Sharing Consent. The Participant Agreement must be read and signed by the farmer who is participating in the Acorn program. Each Data Collector should bring at least two copies for every farmer, and the agreement can also be uploaded in the DCT app.
The Data-Sharing Consent
This document explains what data will be collected and how it will be used. It is recommended to bring this document along, and it can also be accessed in the DCT app.
The infographic
This visual aid helps explain the project clearly to farmers. Be sure to bring it along to assist with communication and understanding.
Risks during data collection
Data collection projects come with various risks, such as incorrect or falsified data. The DCT app helps mitigate these risks by allowing offline work and automatically locking after 5 minutes of inactivity, but there are still things to watch out for:
Data loss: If the phone used for data collection is damaged, lost, or stolen before submission, the collected data could be lost. Always ensure the DCT app is protected with a secure PIN code.
Overlapping plots: The DCT app helps reduce the risk of collecting duplicate plots by showing previously collected plots in the area. However, if a plot overlaps with another, submit it for review to identify any potential mistakes.
Falsified data: Sometimes data collectors may falsify information, creating fake or split plots to increase their earnings. Watch for unusual plot patterns and review these cases through the portal. Check out our article regarding managing data for more information.
Dealing with data loss
If a phone is lost, stolen, or damaged before data can be submitted, there is a risk of losing the farmer data. In case of damage, try to repair the phone. If the device cannot be recovered, the data will need to be recollected using another device.
Incentives for data collectors
Data collectors need incentives to perform their tasks effectively, and this is often provided through payment. Payment methods can vary: by plot, plot size, or per submission. It is important to create a reward system that encourages data collectors to work both accurately and efficiently, while taking into account the specific conditions in the region.
